Cairns are created from the collaborative act of carrying rocks and stones from one place and stacking them together in another. Rock cairns are usually associated with ancient cultures, but this practice still continues today and these human-made stacks can often be seen on mountain tops or as markers on a trail. I began sticking paper cutout stones into a notebook together, but separated – reflecting the situation in which we found ourselves over the past couple of years – like part of a petrified landscape.
